How to Calculate a Grade Percentage

Converting points to a grade percentage is a single division. Divide your points earned by the total points possible, then multiply by 100. That's your percentage grade.

Grade % = (Points Earned ÷ Points Possible) × 100

Example 1: 45 out of 50 points
Grade % = (45 ÷ 50) × 100 = 90% → A−

Example 2: 73 out of 100 points
Grade % = (73 ÷ 100) × 100 = 73% → C

Example 3: 17 out of 20 points
Grade % = (17 ÷ 20) × 100 = 85% → B
  1. Enter points earned. This is how many points you got on the assignment — the number at the top of your graded paper.
  2. Enter points possible. This is the maximum score for the assignment — usually shown as the denominator (e.g. 45/50 means 50 is possible).
  3. Read your result. Your percentage, letter grade, GPA equivalent, points lost, and how many points you'd need for the next letter grade all appear instantly.
  4. Use the bulk converter for multiple assignments. Add a row for each one and all percentages calculate simultaneously.

Frequently Asked Questions

30 out of 40 is 75%. Calculation: (30 ÷ 40) × 100 = 75%. On the standard grading scale, 75% is a C (70–79% range). With plus/minus grades, it's a C.
45 out of 50 is 90%, which is an A− on the standard plus/minus scale (90–92% range), or a straight A on scales that use 90%+ for an A. GPA equivalent: 3.7.
In most US high schools and colleges, 60% is the minimum passing grade (D). However, some courses — especially prerequisites and major requirements — may require a C (73%) or higher to count toward your degree. Always check your school's specific requirements, as graduate programs typically require a B (83%) or higher in core courses.
Use the Bulk Grade Converter above — enter each assignment's earned points and total possible points. Each converts to its own percentage. If you want an overall average that accounts for different point values, the most accurate method is to add up all points earned across all assignments, then divide by the total points possible across all assignments. Our Grade Calculator tool handles this automatically.
Yes — 70% is typically a C− and is a passing grade at most institutions. However, "passing" depends on context. A 70% passes the course but may not satisfy major requirements that need a C (73%) or higher. For graduate school applications, a 70% (C−) would be considered below competitive. Check your specific program requirements to know what grade you actually need.
